COMPOUNDERS UPDATE

Massachusetts Bill Includes New Requirements for Compounders, Fines for Violations

Legislation in Massachusetts, geared towards ensuring the safety of compounded medications, includes new inspection requirements and fines for violations, among other provisions. Read H 4235. Essentially pharmacies engaged in sterile compounding have to pass an inspection as a requisite for renewing their license. The board will also conduct random inspections of such licensees. The law creates four new specialty licenses: retail sterile compounding, retail complex nonsterile compounding, institutional pharmacy, and nonresident pharmacy. Violators could face fines of up to $25,000 per violation. The bill passed in the Massachusetts Legislature on June 30, 2014, and is now with Governor Patrick Deval, according to The Associated Press.
